The North Korean (DPRK) regime under its leader, Kim Jung-un, has brought the United States and the world under a foreboding dark cloud of nuclear war and its ominous aftermath. The previous administrations’, beginning with former President’s G.W. Bush, Clinton, and Obama, were clueless as to a feasible approach to ending NK’s interest in the development of weapons of mass destruction. Given that the NK scientists are interested in advancing their economy and the efficient use of nuclear energy, it could well have used its income for such purposes rather than to have expended it on this research. Further, its principal ally China has failed to appropriately counsel NK to choose to spend its resources on uplifting the standard of living for its people rather than increasing its expenditures on shoring up its military and arms. Moreover, Russia also has failed to exert its influence on NK by emphasizing to them that its activities serve to further destabilize the region and contribute to a world war zeitgeist. North Korea’s young president should better have guided his countrymen to spend their research resources on advancing its technological and agricultural sectors. Finally, Pres. Trump has failed to de-escalate tensions by his rhetorical threatening tweets and public pronouncements characterizing his predecessors handling of NK as “wimpy.” A stern diplomacy which does not yield to NK is what is called for as well as some concession to their need to improve their standard of living.
